The Most Used And Loved Breastfeeding Essentials

Breastfeeding is the most beautiful, remarkable, and sometimes most difficult experience! I’m so blessed to have been able to breastfeed, mostly exclusively, both of my girls. Whether you’re a new mom-to-be or a seasoned nursing pro, finding the right essentials to support you is key! Here are my must-have breastfeeding essentials that I’ve used throughout my 3-year (and counting!) breastfeeding journey, to empower you on your own journey! “Let’s go girls!” (said in Shania’s voice..)

must have breastfeeding essentials

Comforting Breastfeeding Essentials:

Get comfy mama! This will allow you to breastfeed enjoyably. When I’m postpartum, I live in button-down long-sleeve pajamas,  a cute nightgown, or just a comfy robe! Especially in those first few weeks when it feels like your boobs are constantly on-demand. You need the easiest access outfits possible, that are also loose-fitting and not squishing the girls. (Here are some of my favorite breastfeeding friendly summer outfits!)

Get comfy with a boppy pillow! Your back takes a beating breastfeeding. Always hunching over, getting the latch just right. The boppy pillow hugs your side and lets baby sit propped up against you, alleviating the need to ‘hunch’ over, saving your back! Have burp cloths + baby wipes on hand in case of any leaks or spit-up!

Soothing Breastfeeding Essentials:

Soothe your nipples with silverettes + nipple cream! I SWEAR by silverettes. Not only do they act as a shield from your bra or shirt when your nipples may be sore, they also have natural anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties! This provides AMAZING relief and healing, especially in the beginning of your breastfeeding journey. You can also put this nipple cream on before or after wearing them, in-between feeds. I bought this, but personally used rose ointment and that worked incredibly well, and also doubles for other things like dry skin, cuts, etc. Having cold compresses and a heating pad nearby are also helpful because with breastfeeding can come lots of different sensations. (why does no one tell us about the ‘pins and needles’ sensation of let-down?! wooooweeee!)

Don’t Miss a Drop:

To catch and store milk, these haakaa ladybugs sit nicely on the breasts and allowed me to have a nice freezer stash. I personally try not to pump too much (I’m an overproducer by nature), and have just used the spectra that came free with my insurance. It was nice and super easy to use! (I’m currently trying out the cordless Elvie and will report back!) Definitely have extra milk storage bags on hand – and label them AM or PM! The morning milk you produce is high in the hormone cortisol, which acts like an energy-like drink for baby. While your PM milk contains melatonin, a soothing, sleep inducing hormone. Our bodies are literally so freaking cool!

Nourishing Breastfeeding Essentials:

I found that when I am breastfeeding, I am RAVENOUS and get dehydrated veryyy quickly! A tip is to keep a cooler or small fridge filled with protein-packed snacks right next to your bed. Protein bars and balls, CHOMPS beef sticks, boiled eggs, etc! Make sure you also keep your water bottle (I LOVE me a Yeti!) filled 24/7 – and with electrolytes! These are my favorites right now: LMNT or putting a pinch of celtic salt in my water with lemon. Track that water intake, mama!

Resting Breastfeeding Essentials:

While your boobs are taking a rest, these are my favorite nursing bras and nursing pads! Take it from me, do NOT wear any other bra other than one creating for nursing! Or – don’t wear anything at all if you’re comfortable with that. The less pressure and constriction on the girls, the better! These are my favorite affordable nursing bras. In those first few months while your supply is regulating, also grab some of the pads above. When let-down happens, those bras can get soaked, and fast!

Healthy boobs, healthy mom:

Lastly, if you have a history of mastitis, grab these sunflower lechitin capsules! It helps to emulsify your milk so that you don’t get clogs. If you do ever feel the dreaded ‘boob flu’ coming on, I have just the natural remedies to help you to get through (from my 6 experiences, wooffff).

With these essential breastfeeding tools in hand, you’re well-equipped to navigate your nursing journey with confidence and ease. Remember, every mom’s breastfeeding experience is unique, so don’t hesitate to tailor these essentials to suit your individual needs. From nurturing your bond with your little one to supporting your own well-being, these tools are here to help you thrive. Here’s to a fulfilling and empowering breastfeeding journey ahead!
