Pregnancy is such an exciting journey, but when summer arrives, I’m learning that the soaring temperatures can make it a bit challenging! This is my second pregnancy, but my first summer pregnancy (due in September!). The combination of pregnancy and hot weather is definitely going to require some extra attention to ensure the well-being of both myself and my growing baby. To help navigate the summer months with ease and comfort, I’ve compiled a list of essential tips that I’ll be keeping at the top of mind during a summer pregnancy, and that you can too!

hydration, hydration, hydration:

Drinking an ample amount of water is crucial during pregnancy, and it becomes even more important in hot weather. I’m aiming to consume at least eight to ten glasses of water each day to stay hydrated.

Tip: Carry a refillable water bottle with you wherever you go, and if you find plain water boring, try infusing it with fresh fruits like lemon or cucumber for a refreshing twist. I also am loving Liquid IV and LMNT packets for added electrolyte support! Buy this: A big ol’ Yeti cup. Need I say more? I have several of these, use them every single day, and they keep my drinks nice and cold for hours and hours and hourssss!

Is it early in your pregnancy? These are the pregnancy symptoms I experienced and the remedies I found that helped.

dress for comfort:

Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen that allow air circulation and wick away moisture from your skin. Loose-fitting, flowy clothing will help you stay cool and prevent irritation. Choose comfortable shoes, too, like these slip-on sandals! And there are SO many colors to choose from! stay in the shade:

Especially during peak hours when the heat is most intense, try your best to seek shade under umbrellas, trees, or take advantage of indoor spaces with air conditioning. If you plan outdoor activities, schedule them during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion. Buy this: Huge, lightweight floppy hats to keep the sun off of your face!

cool down with water:

Take advantage of water-based activities to beat the heat. Swimming is an excellent exercise for pregnant women as it provides relief from swollen joints and overheating. Additionally, you can cool off by taking a refreshing dip in a pool, relaxing in a cool bath, or using a spray bottle filled with water to mist your face and body. Buy this: Handheld mister fan! Have a pool? I’m testing out this pregnant pool floaty this summer! Pro tip: A dab of peppermint oil on the back of your neck can help your body cool down quickly!

prioritize rest and relaxation:

Pregnancy can be tiring, and the summer heat can add to your fatigue. Listen to your body and rest when needed. Schedule frequent breaks throughout the day to relax in a cool and comfortable environment. Elevate your feet to reduce swelling and consider using a pregnancy pillow for better sleep during hot nights. Buy this: I use this pregnancy pillow!

eat light and nutritious meals:

Opt for lighter meals that are rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. These foods are not only hydrating but also provide essential nutrients for you and your baby. Incorporate salads, smoothies, and chilled soups into your diet to stay nourished and cool. Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods that can cause discomfort and indigestion. I also love popsicles made with real fruit, like Goodpop and Outshine! Buy this: My favorite natural supplement for acid reflux relief and favorite essential oil for an upset stomach!

keep cool with fans and air conditioning:

Make use of fans, air conditioning, or portable air coolers to create a comfortable environment at home. Create cross-ventilation by opening windows and using fans strategically. If possible, invest in a cooling mattress or place a damp towel on your pillow to help regulate body temperature and aid in a good night’s sleep. Buy this: We’ve loved this fan for our daughter, so I grabbed a second one to have for myself!

take off your rings:

Pregnancy can cause swelling in our extremities – the summer heat can ramp that up! I’ll be wearing my rings only on special occasions, and trying out a silicone ring to wear throughout the hot summer days. The last thing I want is for my finger to swell up and be unable to take it off! Get this: A silicone wedding ring!

grab a cute 2-piece bathing suit:

I tried to wear a one-piece, and it just felt so uncomfortable and HOT on my belly. I found these 2-piece options were much better suited for me! Blue top // bottoms and Red top // bottoms – LOVE all of Aerie’s bathing suits!

use an all-natural sunscreen and insect repellent:

Our skin is our largest organ, so it’s important to be very mindful of what we are putting on it to protect ourselves as many body care products contain unnecessary, harmful ingredients. I’ve done the research long before I became pregnant, and opt for these safe, effective products to protect my skin and wellness while enjoying the outdoors! Get this: Insect repellent and these sunscreen products!

Summer pregnancy can present unique challenges, but with a little preparation and attention to self-care, we can all enjoy this special time while staying cool and comfortable! Let’s prioritize hydration, dress appropriately, seek shade, and listen to our body’s needs. Remember, staying cool and relaxed is not only beneficial for your well-being but also for the healthy development of your baby. Wishing you a delightful and breezy summer pregnancy experience, too!
